Increasing baseline heart rate

Summary

A 29 year old G1 P0 in gestation weeks 38+4 with diet controlled gestational diabetes is admitted to the labour ward with mild contractions at 15.30. Blood sugar levels are normal.

  • 16.12 VE: Cx fully effaced, 3 cm dilated, vx -2.  ARM performed, clear liquor draining.
  • 16.50 Oxytocin infusion started.
  • 17.32 VE: Cx fully effaced, dilated 4 cm, vx -2.  Oxytocin infusion stopped due to abnormal CTG tracing. Obstetrician decides to perform a caesarean section.
  • 17.57 Caesarean section. Baby girl born.

Apgar score:  8, 9, 10.

Comment

The fetus is speeding up its heart rate in the end to compensate the oxygen deficiency.
